News post – Catch-23 No. 909 Rental Reference

While not strictly based on a true story, it is definitely based on a real conversation with friend of the strip Jason (note: the guy in the strip does not look like Jason). I was asked if would be a referee for a rental property lease and my response was what Jaffa says in Panel 3. I was never called and Jason got the lease, but the situation of vouching that your friend by saying they’re definitely NOT a danger to society made me laugh (more than was called for) so it seemed right to comic strip-ize it.

News post – Catch-23 No. 908 Rigged

Surprise, surprise – now that Donald is behind in the polls, the whole system is rigged. Rigged, I tell you! Despite all evidence to the contrary, perfectly illustrated by this video from Joss Whedon’s Save the Day team, Donald is still squawking about it. Well, if it were true surely it would cut both ways. It would certainly help explain how this turtle got up this particular fence post.

News post – Catch-23 No. 907 Flame on

I tried to come up with a new angle on the Samsung Note 7 debacle and asked the question ‘who wouldn’t be bothered by a phone that sometimes catches fire’? The Human Torch seemed a logical conclusion.

News post – Catch-23 No. 906 Elseworlds

This comics strip went through several drafts – the first draft included some exposition about what Elseworlds is – basically it’s DC Comics’ name for stories that aren’t officially part of the comic universe, such as the Red Son story where Superman landed in Communist Russia rather than Kansas. The Elseworlds alternate-timeline is, I think, a perfect explanation for what Zack Snyder is doing with Superman, Batman and the Justice League. The ‘real’ timeline is what we’re seeing in the TV shows Supergirl, The Flash and Arrow. All three shows are excellent, by the way, and well worth checking out. They bring the humour, fun and colour that the big-screen versions are sorely lacking.

I was also going to include the recent news from the New York Comic Con that Wonder Woman is now official a queer character, which is not a huge shock given that the Amazons from Greek mythology were an all-female society, but it’s still ruffled quite a few comic’s fans feathers.

In the end, I realised that the strip was way too wordy and perhaps too specific to my tastes, so I pulled back a bit and ended up here. The DNA of the above ideas are still part of the strip but it’s not weighed down by them and I still say what I intended to say.

News post – Catch-23 No. 905 Trump Debater

The Presidential Debate seemed to be mostly Trump denying that he said ridiculously ignorant things, which seems to be his entire platform.

For the record, his tweet about global warming being a Chinese conspiracy has not been deleted, and I can’t decide if that’s a good thing or not.
